Dagorath - Evil Is The Spirit  | | A year after their first full-length Glare of the Morning Star, Dagorath has recently released the new EP Evil is the Spirit. Although the new release is “only” an EP, I think it marks an important turning point in the sound and career of the Polish band. In fact, while the previous album was much more traditional in its raw sound, the new EP shows the search for a more personal sound, a Dagorath sound, so to speak, which is in my opinion much more ominous and sinister, but also abrasive at the same time. A certain melodiousness reveals perhaps an influence of bands like Mglá, but it is not only that, as demonstrated by “Na piedestale œmierci” which is disharmonic and dissonant. All the songs are arranged and given unity effectively, while the screaming is evil and malignant. The sound is dirty and unwelcoming. It is no coincidence that the Polish band pays tribute to Von, the American cult band within Satanism, occultism, and blasphemy also hailed by many Norwegian bands: the album contains the cover of “Veadtuck”, previously covered by Urgehal.
